Here is a survey we had fun with on the radio today.

According to a magazine survey: Miami and San Diego have
America’s most attractive people. Where are the ugly people?  According to the same survey: The city of Philadelphia has America’s least attractive people. Philadelphia was also
found to be among the least stylish, least active, least friendly and least worldly.
I called Dawn in Philly and got her reaction to this survey!

As a radio host and producer I am constantly being pitched guest and story ideas.  Every Monday I will share my favorite pitch from the week.

Here's the Radio Guy's pick-o-the-week:

Mike Slosberg is not giving in to old age. He's fighting back -- with poetry. The ancient Japanese kind, of course, called Haiku. His book called Pimp My Walker: The Official Book of Old Age Haiku is brimming with 60 poems. So how , you ask, can a poem fight arthritis or bring back memory? Well, actually it can't -- but the ones Slosberg pulled together are packed with humor and have turned old age into an art form. Check these out:
  1. I can remember / When sex was better than food/ Now vice is versa
  2. Grandkids are a joy / Play a while, and hand them back / Just like a Hertz car
  3. High school reunion / Everyone looks so ancient / Except for yours truly
Mike Slosberg is no slacker, though graying on top himself. He's written two novels and a book of cartoons which he wrote and illustrated himself. He's currently working on a third novel, a children's book, a play and, believe it or not, a time machine... really!

I love the simplicity of this media release and I am a huge fan of short and sweet!

Today after my radio show I was on my way to a coffee shop, to write something wise for this blog, when I was repeatedly stopped by strangers asking, “Who was the lady on the radio this morning?

That ‘girl’ was motivational speaker and business coach, Alecia Huck.

What did she do that made so many people ask who she was?

Alecia kept her interview simple AND she had fun doing it! Her personality blasted through the telephone line and she connected with the listeners.

She told people to lighten up and stop stressing.

And she said that if you have a to-do list of 25 or more things that have to get done—well burn it, ’cause you will never get it done! (ALECIA GAVE LISTENERS THE PERMISION TO STOP FEELING LIKE FAILAURES EVERYDAY THAT THEY DON’T GET THE LIST DONE.)

She talked about being in the groove when everything you do is feeling good. You know, when everything you touch is gold and you feel good—she called this: “Feeling like a rock star. (MY LISTENERS CONNECTED WITH HER AND COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD THE FEELING.)

She talked about building yourself up when no one else will. (LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND SAY TO YOURSELF, “I’M A GENIUS OR “I’M HOT.)

Finally she made us laugh by saying that even when things go bad, go back to building yourself up. The example she used was: Even if you drop your cell phone in the toilet, say to yourself, “This might be a huge problem if I wasn’t so HOT!â€?  Haha!

Everyone in the radio station is now walking around saying, “You’re HOTâ€? or “You’re a GENIUS,â€? and smiling.  And this is all because of Alecia’s great interview where she talked to the listeners’ like she was talking to her girlfriends in a bar!

My final words are:

It always comes back to how well you do the interview and how you interact with the audience.

The view is a HOT TV show.  There is no way around it.  Women love talking about...in fact now with Woopi Goldberg on the show...their ratings are even higher.

Here's an example of a piggyback.  I took the title and changed it for my radio show.  I simply called it Women's View and then had 2 women give us their view on whatever topics I come up with.

It's a great way of building show bits because the listener is already familiar with the concept.  Listeners never want to think too hard in the morning. They are busy.

Take a listen

As a media coach, I see too many people spending time working on the wrong things.  The number one key to be asked back on a radio show is:
Being great on the air!
Listen to how comfortable William Lamb was as a first time guest on my radio show.

Thanks

As a real life morning radio host, I never have a shortage of great stories about successful interviews.  On the other side of the coin I also have many disastrous stories about people who blew an opportunity for media exposure.

Last week on my radio show, Comedian Sean Morey did something that every guest would be wise to do.  It's a great way to get extended time on the radio which means more free publicity for you!
