I’m in a mood to rant!  My radio show listeners are always excited when this happens because they know I am going to lose it on someone who’s done something stupid.

And today, I am bringing this to my Blog.

What is with people who claim to be experts?  Why don’t we have some kind of credibility police on the Internet?

I’m noticing some people are trying to pitch themselves as radio host pr’s…and yet they couldn’t get a job on a radio station unless their parents owned it!

It is cheating to say you are a radio host when you pay to play.

What’s pay to play?  You ask.

Anyone can walk into a radio station and pay for a block of advertising time and put on a radio show.  BUT this doesn’t make you a radio host…except for on the Internet.  If this was true, then because I have changed a flat tire, I am now a tire expert. Or because I repaired a fan, I’m an electrician. Or, because I changed oil in my car I am now a Mechanic…

I have listened to some of these people and I am absolutely amazed they can pitch themselves as hosts. They sound awful. They are not prepared. And their interviews sound fake.

To me, a radio host is someone who is paid by a radio company. They have a dedicated air shift from 6-9am, 9-2pm, 2-7pm, 7-midnight, or midnight-6am.  If you host a show for 1 hour, once a week, or once a month, you are not a host!  You are an infomercial disguised as a host.

So why am I so upset?  Because this is an insult to the guys who have worked so damn hard to build their radio brand for years.  Guys like Glenn Beck, Ryan Seacrest, Howard Stern, Jeff and Jer, Bro Jake, Mike Savage, Larry King, Regis Philbin…and the list goes on and on and on.

So where are the true PR experts?  Steve Allen, a PR wiz in LA, is legit. Jeff Crilley, ex TV reporter, is Legit. Joan Stewart, The publicity hound, is legit. Michele Anton, former producer of Dr. Laura, is Legit.

So please do your homework when it comes to hiring someone on the internet....just cause Mom says you are the best, it doesn't make it reality.

Tomorrow I'll be back with some radio advice.

Thanks

Wayne Kelly
