1.      It’s the most wonderful time of the year….to sell books!  Welcome to book selling time.  BUT before anyone will buy, they need to hear about it. The fastest way to make this happen is using radio shows and being invited in as a guest.  Can anyone do it?  Absolutely!  Can you contact the media without a publicist?  Absolutely!  Will they book you if your topic fits their show demographics? YES! I recently interviewed Amy Foster about her new book When Autumn Leaves.  Now if this wasn’t in the media, how would I know what it’s about and why I should pick it up?  If you have boxes of books in your basement and want to move them, call me at 250-512-1281…maybe I can help get you on the radio sooner rather than later.

2.      I was watching Dragon’s Den last night. (It’s the Canadian Version of Shark Tank) It’s a show where entrepreneurs pitch their company before a group of investors and hopefully get an injection of cash and bring on some powerful business partners. I was shocked to see 2 local guys pitching their new hockey game. Local media would have eaten this up and given them thousands of dollars in free promotion because they were being featured on a national TV show. How do I know this would happen?  Because 2 months ago another local man pitched his company on the Dragon’s Den and he was in 3 newspapers, local TV shows, and on my Radio show.

3.      Let’s end with a laugh: MAN SUES AXE FOR LACK OF GIRLS: A man having trouble with the ladies is suing the company that makes Axe products, for over $40,000 because the products did not help him attract any women. The Axe products include body sprays, shampoos, deodorants and soaps. The man says he used the products for seven years and did not attract a single girlfriend. The lawsuit states that he is suing the company for "depression and psychological damage".

Radio is about having fun!  The media is interested...let me help you connect with them!  If you have a book and are interested - let's see if there is a fit.  Call 250-512-1281

I had an interview booked with a Shel Busey, who is a Canadian Guru when it comes to home repairs. The interview was scheduled at 8am.  I called and got the wrong number.  I called again...and still the wrong number. I thought oops, we've been promo'ing Shel coming on the show for the past 2 hours...what now.
Luckily, Shel is a pro!  Listen to what happened...

My friend Jeff Crilley has been a great resource for my radio show recently. He doesn't even bother pitching me guests that don't fit my personality or my demo.  His PR clients are exactly what I am looking for. Now don't let him hear this podcast cause his head will explode and then I won't be able to call him anymore because he'll be far too big for the Radio Guy!  Haha!

Listen to the podcast to hear how he does it.

I just returned from 5 days at Disney World in Florida.  And I was amazed by the people that come from all over the world too see the mouse! I realized Disney has built a brand that we don't even question.  We'll pay anything to get in and experience the magic kingdom.  Today's podcast is about selling yourself to the media like Disney.

I'm fresh back from a month vacation and I'm wading through all the emails from people who have been trying to get on my radio show.  But after a month of not looking at any email, I have to say, I'm surprised at how many media releases don't grab me.  In fact, they are down right boring! So it's time for you to be drastic.  Be OVER the top!  Say something new that no-one else is saying!  At On Air Publicity, we're allergic to boring...and boring gets you nothing.  If you are not getting results, check your boring factor. There's your PR tip of the day.

Today I was emailed a media release for Gene Simmons...yes the legend of Kiss, and Family Jewels on TV to be on my radio show.

Here's the media release hook that Gene used to get media:

Rock legend Gene Simmons isn't shy about his love of the ladies. He proudly boasts more than 4,800 sexual encounters in his lifetime.

So it would seem that Simmons is perfectly suited to document the 'world's oldest profession.' As he puts it, "In good times and in bad times ladies of the night will always do well."

Simmons says he doesn't use prostitutes himself, but finds the subject fascinating. So much so, that he researched and wrote a new book devoted to the traditionally taboo topic. Simmons is about to start filming Season IV of his A & E reality series Gene Simmons Family Jewels and is involved in numerous creative and business ventures.

The latest book is Ladies of the Night: A Historical and Personal Perspective on the World's Oldest Profession.

Contact: PR details were here.

What I find surprising is that Gene actually had to write this.  I would have expected something simple like Gene's doing interviews call me...
But he didn't.  The reason is, Gene knows what he wants to talk about and what he wants to promote.  This media release puts you into the same mind frame as he is.

My advice for you is follow the leaders in your industry. Learn what they do to be successful and then you follow suit. If you don't have a full PR team working for you...then just watch what the experts are doing. Watch Gene and Learn. That's your PR tip of the day.

I have people who always ask me which list they should buy for media contacts.

My answer is—Don’t waste your money!  The power of your PR campaign is not in any list that you buy…it’s in the content and delivery style of your interview.  So what if you have an email for Seacrest or Larry King…It makes no difference at all.  The only people who really care about a list are newbies.  (These are people who are brand new to the PR game and want to try and get to as many shows as possible.)

The secret to a great PR game is…building up your brand and then getting the media calling you!  That’s it!  All the biggest shows on the planet will not book you just because you contacted them from some list. In fact, all of us media types use something that’s far more powerful than lists…and guess what it costs us?  $0.00 Yup! Not one cent!!

It’s called Google.  All you have to do is Google talk radio producers, or radio in Orlando, or Washington radio shows.  The lists will come pouring in.

PLUS, most lists are out of date before you ever get them.  People in radio are constantly on the move…so forget about the list.

So you want to contact a radio station.  What format are you going after?  Do you know what the demographics of that station are?  See, this is way more important than a list.

Is google too much work…then how about going to www.radiostationworld.com or www.radio-locator.com. Us “media types” use both those resources.  Now pull out a check and send $10 to Wayne Kelly 568-4155 Deep Lake Boundary Rd. Colville WA, 99114. Why send me money? Because I just saved you thousands of dollars.

If you must buy a list, there is only 1 that I do recommend. And I know it is updated regularly.  That would be http://www.sabahradioshows.com/ of 1001 radio contacts.  It’s a very reasonable price at $150. If you decide to buy it instead of sending me my $10…make sure you tell him Wayne Kelly sent you.

Oh, before I go, if you want to understand demographics, what shows and producers really want in an interview, how to drive people to your website after the interview, and all the insider secrets to radio publicity, go to www.onairpublicity.com/buyebook.html

I’m in a mood to rant!  My radio show listeners are always excited when this happens because they know I am going to lose it on someone who’s done something stupid.

And today, I am bringing this to my Blog.

What is with people who claim to be experts?  Why don’t we have some kind of credibility police on the Internet?

I’m noticing some people are trying to pitch themselves as radio host pr’s…and yet they couldn’t get a job on a radio station unless their parents owned it!

It is cheating to say you are a radio host when you pay to play.

What’s pay to play?  You ask.

Anyone can walk into a radio station and pay for a block of advertising time and put on a radio show.  BUT this doesn’t make you a radio host…except for on the Internet.  If this was true, then because I have changed a flat tire, I am now a tire expert. Or because I repaired a fan, I’m an electrician. Or, because I changed oil in my car I am now a Mechanic…

I have listened to some of these people and I am absolutely amazed they can pitch themselves as hosts. They sound awful. They are not prepared. And their interviews sound fake.

To me, a radio host is someone who is paid by a radio company. They have a dedicated air shift from 6-9am, 9-2pm, 2-7pm, 7-midnight, or midnight-6am.  If you host a show for 1 hour, once a week, or once a month, you are not a host!  You are an infomercial disguised as a host.

So why am I so upset?  Because this is an insult to the guys who have worked so damn hard to build their radio brand for years.  Guys like Glenn Beck, Ryan Seacrest, Howard Stern, Jeff and Jer, Bro Jake, Mike Savage, Larry King, Regis Philbin…and the list goes on and on and on.

So where are the true PR experts?  Steve Allen, a PR wiz in LA, is legit. Jeff Crilley, ex TV reporter, is Legit. Joan Stewart, The publicity hound, is legit. Michele Anton, former producer of Dr. Laura, is Legit.

So please do your homework when it comes to hiring someone on the internet....just cause Mom says you are the best, it doesn't make it reality.

Tomorrow I'll be back with some radio advice.

Thanks

Wayne Kelly

Are you planning on launching your media campaign this fall?  If so, let me tell you why it’s important to start NOW!

Book publishers say that the fall is the hottest time of year for book sales. So it makes sense for you get on the radio and tell millions of people how your book is a great addition to their libraries.  Here’s the only problem with your plan.

The fall is also ratings time for radio stations. This is when stations pull out all the stops and try to create the best radio to pull in the most listeners. The higher the stations are in ratings, the more money they can charge for advertising. So hosts and producers will not take a chance on any new interviews unless they are proven to be a great guest.

The way to get around this is to start now.  Summer is a great time for you to get media attention!  Think of this time as your audition.  If they like you, maybe you’ll get a ton of f..r..ee publicity for your book, product, or business. BUT I do have 1 warning.

Make sure you know how to do a great interview!  The best topic with the best written media release won’t save you if the interview sucks.

Starting Tuesday July 15th, I will be teaching a 3-part course on getting ready for interviews. Let me show you how to be 100% ready to impress producers, hosts, and listeners.  Get details at:

For today’s podcast let’s talk about the power of a piggyback story. As radio host, this is one of the most important piece of your PR Puzzle. Why?  Because it makes you relevant to some current events story. My example today is something I saw on the news yesterday.

It said,
<em>
Wanna lose weight? Break out the pencil and paper. In a study, those
who kept track of all they ate and drank lost about twice as much
weight as those who did not keep track.</em>

To be completely honest with you…I am bored to tears doing any weight loss interviews because does anything really help?  If you want to lose weight, you can lose it…if you don’t really want to…then you will continually fail.  But anyway, this new study about tracking is a great common sense approach and it’s a fresh concept.  Even though, if you’ve ever worked out before, tracking your diet is a common practice.

So my advice is, take your fitness ideas and wrap them around this new study and I guarantee you will get media attention from every local radio, TV, and newspaper outlet. If it makes CNN, then all the small locals want to do a story for their local market.

That’s my publicity tip d’jour.
Wayne Kelly

Traditional media meets new media and the result is powerful!...Today I saw a huge example of just that...with an amazing story about how the power of youtube helped Jimmy Kimmel.
His late night ABC show has been renewed through 2010. Jimmy Kimmel Live! debuted in 2003 and has seen a recent surge in popularity following the release of videos featuring Kimmel and girlfriend Sarah Silverman confessing their faux infidelities with best friends Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Now if you haven’t seen these videos, I have to say they were brilliant.  ***Beware - they use the F word***  These videos and news about Jimmy solidify the point…media and PR is now intertwined between traditional media (radio, tv, and magazine) and new media (blogs, podcasts, and online video portals).  So it’s time to start making videos and making yourself the local online celebrity in your field.

When doing a radio interview, you have 2 must follow rules. Entertain and Educate.  When I say entertain, I don't mean that you have to be funny or comical but you need to speak with passion.  Speak with the passion of a new parent talking about their new baby.  Educate simple means tell us something that we can learn from.

Yesterday I interviewed Peggy McColl about her latest book, The 21 Distinctions of Wealth.  She did everything right including saying the name of her book when the opportunity arose.

My copy is in the mail and I can't wait to read every word and put it into action...that's the power of a great interview.

Last week on my radio show, we got into a discussion on who has more anxiety, men or women.  My co-host Jayne said women cause they have to carry the world and deal with men.  I say it’s men but we just don’t talk about it.  It was 3 hours of radio interaction with my listeners when a Life Coach called out of the blue and gave us a kick in the pants. Listen to how He got f.r.e.e radio publicity  - and listen to how he ends the interview making sure he’ll get invited back again!

The gauge of a successful guest is if you light up the phones or not.

Nothing excites me more than when the phones start ringing after an interview on my radio show. This is exactly what happened after Dr. Cindy Brown finished her interview on why men cheat.

I know that listeners only catch a few words of an interview because they are busy getting kids ready for school or they are driving to work...whatever people do in the morning...so they missed her saying few times that communication is important and the success of a relationship it's not just about the women or the men.
Then she mentioned a couple things women can do to help their relationship...and I knew my female listeners were going to have something to say about it.

(But Cindy, all us guys think you're the best!!!!)

I was very impressed talking to an up and comer named Jeremy Fisher.  He has this great song called High School and he was just nominated for a Juno award (which is the Canadian Grammy).  I had no idea how this interview was going to go...but he really cracked me up.  I had a ton of calls asking when he was coming to town, cause listners liked him. He used humour and it worked.

Being a radio host and media coach, I pay very close attention to what makes a great interview.  In particular, do I get a good vibe during the interview.
I have been interviewing the Gabby Cabby from New York for almost 8 years now. I even took my radio show on the road once and broadcast from his cab.  Listen to the feeling and vibe the Gabby Cabby gives off in this interview.  He always has an opinion and never sits on the fence.  This is a key to being a great interview.  Enjoy my interview with Peter Franklin, the Gabby Cabby, from www.gabby.com

I locked myself away in hiding for a month as I re-did 3 websites...and today I am proud to share them with you.

  1. www.onairpublicity.com has been redone to become a great resource site with past teleclasses up and even a draw in the Free Tips section.  Many thanks to Sherman Hu of www.shermanlive.com for helping me create a site I absolutely LOVE!!!
  2. www.52motivationalinterviews.com is a site dedicated to 52 interviews that changed my life as an entrepreneur!  I listened to these interviews to build my confidence as I switched from paycheck to self employed with a successful media coaching business.  My goal is to raise a Million for Alzheimer’s research.  This disease has robbed a few of my family members of themselves.
  3. www.MyRadioGuests.com is an amazing resource site for the media and anyone who does interviews.  If you are looking for guests for your teleclasses, podcasts, or radio shows, you can checkout each guest before you book them.  You can listen to how they sound… \then just follow the  interview roadmap as it is already laid out so you will sound amazing!!!  (If you want to be featured on this site, email me)
Now it comes to promotion and Publicity!

I am not just a preacher of Radio Publicity, I am also a user. Radio and interview opportunities are the fastest way to spread the message about anything I do.

I start doing interviews.  And it is so amazing that once you commit to doing interviews, there is no shortage of opportunities.  And if you know how to be a great interview…even more interviews will flock in.

I am now at 5 interviews and I have sold product, plus made some great JV partners that will definitely make money.  Also I have booked 3 more teleclasses with some big names to talk about Radio Publicity and Motivation.

When I book interviews, I always deliver great content and offer to make everything as painless as possible for the interviewer.

This makes all the difference in the world to your success.  If you want me to do a teleseminar for your list or group, email me and let’s make it happen.  I plan on doing 200 interviews this year. And If I can do it…you can do it.

I look forward to working with you in 2008!

By now you know I am a radio host who interviews dozens of people every week on my radio show.
But do you know how many actually do those interviews well?

In fact, most radio and TV hosts hate interviewing authors!
I know that hurts, but it's the truth.

To help, I have put together a training program (it starts this Tuesday, Dec. 2)  designed to make you a great interview that media is excited to talk to.

It's the most affordable class you will ever find for media coaching and you will be completely finished in 2 weeks!

Please take a moment to see the details at:

Every week I keep my eyes open for an effective media release.  Why this one caught my eye is because I could see it on many different styles of radio shows.  It can be for the busy mom market...or the single men market...or the new college student market.

Here it is:

Shhhhhhhh.... don't tell anyone but there's a helpful site on the Internet that crawls the web to find recipes based on what's in your kitchen right now. That's right -- based on what's stashed in your fridge and in the corners of your cabinets. The name? Supercook.com, and it has a database of 250,000 recipes.

Supercook locates recipes on the web and then tells you exactly how many recipes you can make altogether, broken down into 'Starters,' 'Entrees,' and 'Dessert' categories. All you have to do is simply list all the ingredients you have.

It will also suggest other recipes that need one or two additional ingredients if you're willing to dash off to the corner store.

Assaf Rozenblatt is the 27-year-old founder of Supercook.com. This Brooklyn, New York-based entrepreneur is also founder of a language search engine called Brainboost.com.

Contact Assaf Rozenblatt at:

Keep tuning in for other samples that I think do a great job of grabbing the eye of the media!

I'm the radio guy with another example of the new way of doing media
releases.  They used to be called press releases but that term implies
printing press, so I stress calling it a media release so you can use it
for radio, TV, print, podcasts, and blogs

Here's the media release I just received from Tim Ferris...
and you know he only works with the best...

********************************************

Ferris is the author of the New York Times bestseller "The
4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere and Join the New
Rich." This Princeton University guest lecturer will explain how
you can make the four-hour workweek a reality--whether you work
for yourself or someone else.

Ferris says you can enjoy the luxury of doing your own version
of what he does: ski in the Andes, race motorcycles in Europe,
scuba dive in Panama and dance tango in Buenos Aires. Ferris has
been featured in the New York Times, National Geographic
Traveler, Maxim and other publications. He runs a multinational
firm from wireless locations worldwide, has been a world record
holder in tango, a national champion in kickboxing, and an actor
on a hit television series in Hong Kong.

Arrange this interview through Campbell Wharton:222-222-2222
Or send mailto:

When it comes to doing a successful interview, prep work is key!
Susan Reid wanted an interview for her website so she contacted me.
She studied my On Air Publicity Interview Manual, She created a media release and media page from my easy top follow samples and our first interview was a home run.

If she didn't study and just decided to wing it, I can guarantee it wouldn't have been so smooth.

America’s most attractive people. Where are the ugly people?  According to the same survey: The city of Philadelphia has America’s least attractive people. Philadelphia was also
found to be among the least stylish, least active, least friendly and least worldly.
I called Dawn in Philly and got her reaction to this survey!

As a radio host and producer I am constantly being pitched guest and story ideas.  Every Monday I will share my favorite pitch from the week.

Here's the Radio Guy's pick-o-the-week:

Mike Slosberg is not giving in to old age. He's fighting back -- with poetry. The ancient Japanese kind, of course, called Haiku. His book called Pimp My Walker: The Official Book of Old Age Haiku is brimming with 60 poems. So how , you ask, can a poem fight arthritis or bring back memory? Well, actually it can't -- but the ones Slosberg pulled together are packed with humor and have turned old age into an art form. Check these out:
  1. I can remember / When sex was better than food/ Now vice is versa
  2. Grandkids are a joy / Play a while, and hand them back / Just like a Hertz car
  3. High school reunion / Everyone looks so ancient / Except for yours truly
Mike Slosberg is no slacker, though graying on top himself. He's written two novels and a book of cartoons which he wrote and illustrated himself. He's currently working on a third novel, a children's book, a play and, believe it or not, a time machine... really!

I love the simplicity of this media release and I am a huge fan of short and sweet!

Today after my radio show I was on my way to a coffee shop, to write something wise for this blog, when I was repeatedly stopped by strangers asking, “Who was the lady on the radio this morning??

That ‘girl’ was motivational speaker and business coach, Alecia Huck.

What did she do that made so many people ask who she was?

Alecia kept her interview simple AND she had fun doing it! Her personality blasted through the telephone line and she connected with the listeners.

She told people to lighten up and stop stressing.

And she said that if you have a to-do list of 25 or more things that have to get done—well burn it, ’cause you will never get it done! (ALECIA GAVE LISTENERS THE PERMISION TO STOP FEELING LIKE FAILAURES EVERYDAY THAT THEY DON’T GET THE LIST DONE.)

She talked about being in the groove when everything you do is feeling good. You know, when everything you touch is gold and you feel good—she called this: “Feeling like a rock star.? (MY LISTENERS CONNECTED WITH HER AND COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD THE FEELING.)

She talked about building yourself up when no one else will. (LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND SAY TO YOURSELF, “I’M A GENIUS? OR “I’M HOT.?)

Finally she made us laugh by saying that even when things go bad, go back to building yourself up. The example she used was: Even if you drop your cell phone in the toilet, say to yourself, “This might be a huge problem if I wasn’t so HOT!?  Haha!

Everyone in the radio station is now walking around saying, “You’re HOT? or “You’re a GENIUS,? and smiling.  And this is all because of Alecia’s great interview where she talked to the listeners’ like she was talking to her girlfriends in a bar!

My final words are:

It always comes back to how well you do the interview and how you interact with the audience.

The view is a HOT TV show.  There is no way around it.  Women love talking about...in fact now with Woopi Goldberg on the show...their ratings are even higher.

Here's an example of a piggyback.  I took the title and changed it for my radio show.  I simply called it Women's View and then had 2 women give us their view on whatever topics I come up with.

It's a great way of building show bits because the listener is already familiar with the concept.  Listeners never want to think too hard in the morning. They are busy.

Take a listen

As a media coach, I see too many people spending time working on the wrong things.  The number one key to be asked back on a radio show is:
Being great on the air!
Listen to how comfortable William Lamb was as a first time guest on my radio show.

As a real life morning radio host, I never have a shortage of great stories about successful interviews.  On the other side of the coin I also have many disastrous stories about people who blew an opportunity for media exposure.

Last week on my radio show, Comedian Sean Morey did something that every guest would be wise to do.  It's a great way to get extended time on the radio which means more free publicity for you!
